Domestic Violence: Nigerian Man Jailed For Killing Wife

An Ikeja High Court has sentenced Akinwale Akinlabi to 12 years in prison for the manslaughter of his wife, Tope, who died on February 2, 2020, from injuries sustained during an incident involving her husband. Akinlabi faced charges of inflicting bodily injury that ultimately led to her death, but he pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charge brought against him by the Lagos State Government.

Delivering the judgment on Monday, Justice Oyindamola Ogala stated that the prosecution had adequately proven the charge of manslaughter. She noted that circumstantial evidence presented during the trial established the defendant’s unlawful acts, which resulted in significant harm to the deceased and directly caused her death. The judge emphasized that the fatal incident stemmed from the violence that occurred between Akinlabi and Tope.

While acknowledging the evidence of violence presented in court, Justice Ogala clarified that the death was unintentional and occurred shortly after the altercation. She referenced the vertical scars on the back of the deceased, as documented in exhibit (f), which corroborated the testimonies of prosecution witnesses. As a result, the prosecution succeeded in establishing all necessary elements of the manslaughter charge against Akinlabi.

Taking into account the defendant’s plea and the unique circumstances surrounding the case, Justice Ogala imposed a sentence of 12 years imprisonment. The judge noted that the sentence would commence from the date of Akinlabi’s incarceration, specifically from February 3, 2020.
