Burkina Faso Releases 11 Nigerian Air Force Pilots After Diplomatic Intervention
Burkina Faso has released 11 detained Nigerian Air Force pilots and crew members following high-level diplomatic intervention by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Reports indicate that the release came nine days after the personnel were detained, shortly after a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, concluded official engagements in Ouagadougou.
The delegation held strategic talks with Burkina Faso‘s leader, President Ibrahim Traoré, as part of efforts to resolve the situation peacefully and strengthen bilateral relations.
Members of the delegation included senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence, and the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters. Their mandate was to pursue dialogue, de-escalate tensions, and secure the release of the detained personnel.

A senior official familiar with the mission disclosed that the engagement focused on fostering mutual understanding, reaffirming trust, and emphasizing Nigeria‘s commitment to regional cooperation and compliance with international aviation and military protocols.
“The mission reflects Nigeria‘s preference for diplomacy and neighbourly engagement. It was a confidence-building visit designed to strengthen trust and reaffirm shared responsibilities in addressing the complex security challenges facing the Sahel region,” the source explained.
The delegation also reiterated Nigeria‘s long-standing commitment to regional security collaboration, intelligence sharing, and stabilisation efforts involving Burkina Faso and other members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Officials expressed optimism that the resolution of the incident would further deepen bilateral understanding and reinforce collective efforts to promote peace, stability, and security across West Africa.
