The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2025 University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Out of the 1,955,069 candidates who wrote the examination, 75% scored less than 200 out of the 400 maximum marks.
Breakdown of Results
According to the results, 420,415 candidates scored above 200 marks, while 7,658 candidates scored between 300 and 319. Only 4,756 candidates scored above 320 marks. The results also showed that 71,701 candidates were absent, while 97 candidates were involved in examination infractions.
The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, has described the performance as “terrible”. He called on the government to take proactive action to revive education, starting from the primary and secondary levels. Osodeke noted that the performance would have a negative impact on the requirement for admission into tertiary institutions.
Call for Education Reform
Vice Chancellor of the African School of Economics, Abuja, Prof Mahfouz Adedimeji, has called for an overhaul of the education system. He emphasized the need to incentivize teaching and improve the welfare of teachers. Adedimeji also stressed the importance of creating conducive environments for learning and orienting students to see education as a ticket to the future.
NAPTAN’s Reaction
The Deputy National President of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, has expressed sadness over the poor performance. He noted that parents are also culpable in the poor performance of the candidates.
Next Steps
JAMB has announced that it will release individual results to candidates this week. The board has also stated that it will investigate cases of suspected malpractices and take necessary actions.
