In a shocking incident in Makurdi, Benue State, a suspected armed robber was beaten to death by an enraged mob while allegedly attempting to steal from the Redeemed Christian Church of God. The event took place on Wednesday behind Modern Market in Makurdi town.
According to reports, the suspect broke into the church building and stole several items before being confronted by local youths. Witnesses claimed that the mob accosted the robber, leading to a violent altercation that resulted in the suspect’s death.
The gruesome scene unfolded as passersby, many on their way to midweek services and the market, fled in fear from the chaotic situation. Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere as tense, with the suspect’s body lying in a pool of blood.
Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Benue State Command, confirmed the incident but noted that police were unable to determine whether the deceased was indeed a robber. Anene stated that no formal reports of theft from the church had been filed. The corpse of the suspected robber has since been taken to a morgue in Makurdi for further investigation.
This tragic event raises questions about mob justice and the implications for community safety, highlighting the need for law enforcement to address crime effectively while ensuring due process is observed.
