Widespread Blackout Hits Bwari Area Council in Abuja Amid AEDC Circuit Breaker Failure

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) is facing significant backlash following the prolonged blackout affecting the Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The outage, which has persisted for nearly two weeks, has plunged millions of residents into darkness, with growing frustration and threats of mass protests from affected communities.

Bwari Area Council is one of the largest and most critical districts in Abuja, housing major residential and commercial hubs such as Kubwa, Dutse, Gwarinpa, Ushafa, and Jiigo.

The area also hosts key federal institutions including the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) headquarters, the Nigerian Law School, and the DSS training academy. According to insider sources, the outage is due to a faulty circuit breaker at the Kubwa transmission station—a technical issue many believe should have been resolved swiftly in a functional system.

Despite assurances from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) that efforts are ongoing to fix the problem, residents remain unconvinced.

Attempts to temporarily reroute electricity through the NDIA circuit breaker have reportedly failed due to overloads and frequent system trips. As a result, businesses, schools, and homes continue to suffer losses. Residents and community leaders, including Chief James Ojobo and Hon. Emeka Ohaeri, have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the response from both AEDC and TCN.

Many are now threatening to organize peaceful protests if the power is not restored promptly, warning that the current situation is unsustainable and damaging to the local economy.
