Ogun State Denies Wrongful Imprisonment of Ogbonna Ogboijonu in Armed Robbery Case

The Ogun State Government has addressed viral reports claiming that Ogbonna Ogboijonu was wrongly jailed for 26 years simply for buying a stolen generator.
In an official press statement dated July 9, 2025, the state denied the allegations, asserting that Ogbonna was directly involved in a violent armed robbery

that resulted in a death and severe injuries during a raid on an ELF petrol station along the Abeokuta–Lagos Road.
The government stated that the attack occurred on October 3, 2000, when a group of armed robbers killed a security guard, Moses Bankole, and left another, Yusuf Akanni, severely injured.
The gang stole a 10KVA Lister generator, which Ogbonna, a generator technician, allegedly detached from its mount during the heist.

The government disclosed that Ogbonna was arrested days later when police intercepted a vehicle smuggling the stolen generator under firewood and water bags.
Though two accomplices fled, Ogbonna was apprehended, escaped custody, and was later re-arrested. He eventually led police to the buyer, who also testified against him in court.
The Ogun State High Court convicted Ogbonna of armed robbery in 2003 and sentenced him to death.
His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 2021, and he was released in 2025 under the Governor’s prerogative of mercy — a pardon that does not erase his conviction.
The statement further noted that Ogbonna never testified in his own defense or brought witnesses to prove his innocence during the trial.
The state described the viral story of wrongful imprisonment as a “lie” and said the conviction was both lawful and justified.
